lyrics

Mary Magdalene was in front of me
in the checkout line
There was hummus in her basket and grape leaves
and two bottles of wine
We made small talk about our kids
and how I liked her dress
I said Looks like you have to buy your own wine these days
That was a joke, I guess

They tell me she's no angel
but I don't see what they mean
Pour a glass of wine out, people
for Mary Magdalene

She took pity on me and smiled
the way certain ladies do
I'd heard some awful things about her
didn't know which ones were true
But something seized me as she pulled away
in her great green Cadillac
I got in my truck and followed her
Always staying three spots back

They tell me she's no angel
but I don't see what they mean
Pour a glass of wine out, people
for Mary Magdalene

She led me to a mobile home
with a cross laid on the door
The paint was fresh were someone tagged it
harlot, slut, and whore
But I remember how she cried
when they bore her man away
and brother, she looked like a widow
in the store that day

I sat there for an hour
feeling tortured like a saint
but I finally knocked on her door
and offered to help her clean that paint
She looked at me with hollow eyes
She'd changed out of her dress
She asked me if I'd like some wine
I wept and said Yes

They tell me she's no angel
but I don't see what they mean
Pour a glass of wine out, people
for Mary Magdalene

They tell me she's no angel
but I don't see what they mean
Pour a glass of wine out, people
for Mary Magdalene
